New Short Story in The Brooklyn Rail

Big news this month of March.

I have a new short story in The Brooklyn Rail. Link here.

It’s called “To the Sea.”

It’s semi-autobiographical with a heavy dose of magical realism.

Read it and enjoy. Please let me know what you think.

Hello World!

New Year, new website, new post!

Here’s the new stuff that’s been happening with me this month:

A short story of mine appears in the inaugural January 2021 issue of The Newarker.

The story has been described as “Stranger Things” meets Kafka meets Borges. It’s my love letter to Newark and the Passaic River. I’ve always been fascinated by nature in extremis, such as the radioactive woods around Chernobyl and the unnatural wildlife in other toxic zones. Hence my inspiration to write on the Passaic.

One of these days, I will put together an annotated version of the story for my fellow Newarkers, who should be amused by all the references and inside jokes.

And read the rest of the magazine, which is helmed by some pretty impressive people. More on the magazine below:

“Founded in 2020, The Newarker is a quarterly journal of history, culture and society in Newark, New Jersey, and its surrounding areas. Our mission is to create an interdisciplinary space that celebrates the creativity and dynamism of our city.”

I apologize to all my friends and family who have been subjected to my online marketing of the story, but look DARLINGS, if Walt Whitman was not above marketing himself, then neither am I. LOL.

The other thing this month:

I have two mini-comic book workshops for Princeton University’s Wintersession that’s coming up in a few weeks. Full details here. Sadly, all slots are gone. But I will make my PowerPoint presentation available on my website soon after.

Sincerely,

Sharon Adarlo in Newark
